F*Cancer!

I had the great privilege of facilitating an all-day storytelling workshop for the Hollyhock Leadership Institute yesterday. What a great group of change-makers in that room!

One woman who really grabbed my attention was Susan Fiedler and the bracelet that she designed to help her deal with her fight with cancer.

My dad-in-law is battling an incurable form of leukemia and “F*Cancer” expresses exactly how both I and my partner feel right now. So I bought a bracelet for each of us.

Check out Susan’s F*Cancer website to order your own bracelet. In addition to having a gorgeous piece of jewelry that makes a pretty bold statement, you’ll be making a $50 donation to InspireHealth, Canada’s foremost not-for-profit integrative cancer care centre. What’s not to love about that?

No Tankers in BC’s northern waters

Join the campaign!

Deface your own loonies with NoTankers.ca stickers!

Sign the petition!

Help save BC’s northern coast from the threat of oil spills.

I just received my package of NoTankers.ca stickers and have put them on 10 loonies, now in circulation in Britannia Beach. Given that most people shopping at our general store are heading to Whistler (we’re the half-way point from Vancouver), I hope that these loonies will be making it into the hands of both high-falloot’n big-wigs wearing Olympics branded gak and upwardly mobile 20-somethings.

The Ugly Side of the HPV Vaccine

What the school pamphlets don’t tell you

My health column for the March issue of Today’s Vancouver Woman (formerly sharedVISION Magazine)

In the 2008–2009 school year, B.C. schools began providing the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine free to girls in grades 6 and 9. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that typically has no symptoms and is one cause of cervical cancer.

I learned about the new “recommended childhood immunization” from my son and was upset to hear that many of the girls he hung out with were having the shot. I wanted to call every mother of every Grade 6 girl I knew and explain why I thought the HPV vaccine was a bad idea. But that might have isolated my own child as “the kid with a crazy mom.” Continue Reading »
